Takazawa Candle TOHAKU & KOMA Cast Iron Holder Set - Large
Bring a quiet moment of calm into your space with the TOHAKU Japanese Candle Set by Takazawa Candle. Inspired by the mist-draped pine groves in the 16th-century masterwork Pine Trees Screen by painter Hasegawa Tohaku, these exquisite candles feature a textured, rustic silhouette designed to echo the rugged beauty of Noto’s native pine trees.
Crafted in Ishikawa Prefecture using time-honored wa-rousoku (traditional Japanese candle) techniques, TOHAKU candles are made entirely from natural sumac plant wax (haze). At their core is a hollow wick hand-rolled from washi paper, rush weed, and dried plant fiber. This unique structure draws air up through the center as it burns, generating a large, luminous, and remarkably stable flame that flickers softly without creating excessive smoke or soot.
Each set is paired with the KOMA Candle Holder, forged from heavy cast iron. Named after the traditional Japanese spinning top (koma), its low center of gravity and broad base provide maximum stability while adding a grounded, industrial accent to your tabletop or daily ritual space.

ABOUT THE MAKER
Founded in 1892 in the coastal port city of Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture, Takazawa Candle is one of the few remaining traditional candle workshops (wa-rousoku) in Japan. During the Edo period, Nanao served as a key stop along the Kitamae-bune sea trade route, allowing local artisans access to raw sumac wax from southern Japan and premium washi paper from Iwami.
Today, Takazawa Candle honors this regional legacy by maintaining century-old hand-pouring techniques while designing contemporary candle forms that fit seamlessly into modern daily rituals.
